7×7=49 è l’ultimo lavoro firmato da Memory Is Not A File, progetto ideato e curato da Damiano Carrara, che per lo spazio SANBE15/C presenta un percorso di stampe fotografiche di grande formato allestite a parete, costruito a partire da immagini vernacolari scattate tra la fine degli anni Quaranta e i primi anni Ottanta su pellicola Kodachrome. Le immagini, selezionate e restaurate con cura quasi maniacale appartengono a un archivio che conta oltre un milione di diapositive provenienti da tutto il mondo.
IL DISPOSITIVO ESPOSITIVO
7 immagini al giorno per 7 giorni consecutivi, ognuno dei quali segue un tema emotivo diverso. Ogni giornata è costruita come una soglia, un modo di stare nel mondo più che un momento della storia.Al termine dell’esposizione, le quarantanove fotografie compongono un itinerario interiore che pone il visitatore al centro della narrazione.
Le immagini esposte, non nascono con intenti artistici. Sono fotografie vernacolari: anonime, familiari, a volte imprecise, talvolta sorprendentemente armoniche. Scatti sottratti alla quotidianità più ordinaria, privi di ambizioni estetiche. Per definizione, non arte. Damiano Carrara lavora sul passato seguendo una traccia emotiva. Seleziona immagini che pulsano, che parlano al cuore prima ancora che allo sguardo.
Nel loro potere evocativo trova uno spazio di trasformazione: i corpi acquistano nomi, i luoghi un’identità, il tempo si fa poroso. Qui l’arte non è il punto di partenza, ma accade nell’incontro.
La mostra propone così un’inversione di ruoli: non è l’immaginazione dell’artista a trascendere la realtà, ma è la realtà stessa, imperfetta, sporca, stonata, autentica, a rivelarsi come origine dell’esperienza estetica. Non c’è un “io” autoriale che impone una visione, ma un “noi” che riconosce nell’immagine un frammento di vita condivisa.
Il percorso espositivo, con sette immagini al giorno, raccolte attorno a un tema, suggerisce già una possibile traiettoria emotiva. A questa traccia si affiancano indizi narrativi, discreti e talvolta ironici, che accennano a nomi, luoghi, epoche possibili. Non si tratta di didascalie che spiegano, ma di aperture che orientano lo sguardo senza chiuderlo. In questo slittamento sottile tra realtà e finzione, i corpi acquistano un’identità provvisoria, i luoghi si caricano di memoria, il tempo si fa poroso. È il visitatore a completare l’opera: entrando in dialogo con l’immagine, la attraversa, la reinventa, la trasforma in visione. Così la memoria diventa una rete emotiva condivisa. È un tempo che continua a scorrere intorno a noi.
Il colore Kodachrome, intenso, materico, imperfetto, supera la nostalgia per farsi pelle della memoria, traccia sensibile del tempo. Le diapositive, nate per scorrere davanti alla lente di un proiettore, oggi ci ricordano che il tempo passa, ma non si esaurisce: si deposita, si stratifica, ritorna, come ci racconta Damiano Carrara, che si definisce un collezionista di ricordi. Il suo gesto non è quello dell’artista che produce immagini, ma di chi salva e riattiva frammenti destinati all’oblio, restituendo loro luce e possibilità di relazione.

7×7=49 is the latest work signed by Memory Is Not A File, a project conceived and curated by Damiano Carrara. For the space SANBE15/C, it presents a series of large-format photographic prints mounted on the walls, developed from vernacular images taken between the late 1940s and the early 1980s on Kodachrome film. The images, selected and restored with almost obsessive care, belong to an archive of over one million slides collected from around the world.
THE EXHIBITION DEVICE
7 images per day for 7 consecutive days, each day following a different emotional theme. Each day is conceived as a threshold, a way of inhabiting the world rather than a specific moment in history. At the end of the exhibition, the forty-nine photographs compose an inner journey that places the visitor at the center of the narrative.
The images on display were not created with artistic intentions. They are vernacular photographs: anonymous, familiar, sometimes imprecise, at times unexpectedly harmonious. Images drawn from ordinary daily life, free from aesthetic ambition. By definition, not art.
Damiano Carrara works with the past by following an emotional trace. He selects images that pulse, that speak to the heart before they address the eye. Within their evocative power, he finds a space of transformation: bodies acquire names, places gain identity, time becomes porous. Here, art is not the starting point; it happens in the encounter.
The exhibition proposes an inversion of roles: it is not the artist’s imagination that transcends reality, but reality itself, imperfect, raw, discordant, authentic, that reveals itself as the origin of aesthetic experience. There is no authorial “I” imposing a vision, but a collective “we” recognizing in each image a fragment of shared life.
The exhibition path, with seven images per day gathered around a theme, already suggests a possible emotional trajectory. Alongside this structure, subtle and occasionally ironic narrative clues hint at possible names, places, and eras. These are not captions that explain, but openings that guide the gaze without closing it. In this subtle shift between reality and fiction, bodies assume provisional identities, places become charged with memory, and time turns porous. It is the visitor who completes the work: by entering into dialogue with the image, they move through it, reinvent it, and transform it into vision. Memory thus becomes a shared emotional network, a time that continues to flow around us.
The Kodachrome color, intense, textured, imperfect, moves beyond nostalgia to become the skin of memory, a sensitive trace of time. Slides, originally meant to slide before the lens of a projector, remind us today that time passes but does not disappear: it settles, stratifies, and returns. As Damiano Carrara, who defines himself as a collector of memories, suggests, his gesture is not that of an artist producing images, but of someone who rescues and reactivates fragments destined for oblivion, restoring to them light and the possibility of connection.
